In the Community
FBJSL established a scholarship program in 2008 for local teens and women who desire to further their education. FBJSL awards two Volunteer Scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each to female high school seniors who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in volunteerism and community service. The New Beginnings Scholarship, in the amount of $2,000, is awarded to a Fort Bend County woman who has had a break in her education and is returning to school, desiring to improve her career opportunities by furthering her education.
In 2011, FBJSL was pleased to present Carissa Gilbert and Lindsey Witte with college scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each for their outstanding volunteer efforts in Fort Bend County. The recipients were chosen from a pool of young women representing public, private and parochial schools throughout Fort Bend County. While there were many outstanding applicants, the winners truly stood out as leaders in volunteer community service.
Carissa Gilbert of Fort Bend Baptist Academy contributed over 300 hours of community and school service throughout her high school career. She served on the Mayor's Youth Advisory Council and worked with Serve Sugar Land. Carissa was very active with the Oliver Foundation, whose goal is to fight childhood obesity; she served on their Teen Board and participated in many projects with the Foundation. Additionally, she completed a summer internship with Baylor College of Medicine during which she worked extensively on "STOP 2048," a project devoted to changing the startling prediction that 100% of Americans will be obese by the year 2048. She also held leadership roles in numerous organizations at her school. Carissa will be attending the University of Pennsylvania majoring in nutrition so that she can continue to fight the obesity epidemic.
Lindsey Witte of Foster High School contributed over 300 hours of community and school service throughout her high school years. Lindsey was the inspiration and driving force behind Foster High School's National Honor Society (NHS) actively supporting families with children suffering from cancer through B.I.G. Love Cancer Care. She organized all of NHS's activities in support of B.I.G. Love Cancer Care, which included several projects during the year. Lindsey completed a 2010 Summer Volunteer Internship at Oak Bend Hospital. She volunteered at Sugar Creek Baptist Church working with elementary students and with the local Special Olympics as a Buddy, and held leadership roles with NHS and HOSA Medical Club. Lindsey will be attending Rice University majoring in biomedical engineering.
