Our areas of Service

Fort Bend Junior Service League members selecting a core placement as their volunteer opportunity provide direct service to one of eight core placement agencies in the Fort Bend community. The following is a list of the agencies our members serve and the services they provide to them.

Child Advocates of Fort Bend (Child Advocates): Child Advocates is committed to helping children navigate the path to permanency because their mission is based upon the belief that every child deserves a safe and permanent home. The agency offers many volunteer opportunities, including: serving as a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) Volunteer (requires a 30 hour training course) or CAC (Child Advocacy Center) volunteer (requires a 17 hour training course), joining an event committee such as the Christmas Home Tour or Gala, joining Friends of Child Advocates to help support a variety of activities benefiting the kids they serve and the volunteers who help them, assisting in providing office support and volunteering for various workshops and programs to create awareness about child abuse and prevention.

East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry (EFBHNM): EFBHNM serves our East Fort Bend County neighbors who are struggling to make ends meet. The agency helps families in financial crisis meet their basic human needs by providing food, financial assistance and other basic necessities of life. The agency offers several direct service opportunities which include: working in the Food Pantry, conducting client interviews, working in the Resale Shop, handing out groceries to clients, administrative work, picking up donated items from area grocery stores and/or restaurants and assisting with fundraisers.

Fort Bend Community Partners Rainbow Room (Rainbow Room): The Rainbow Room is an actual room connected to the Fort Bend County CPS office where children are taken directly after they have been taken from their homes. Too often, these kids are taken from their homes with nothing more than the clothes on their backs. The Rainbow Room tries to ease this transition by providing comfort items and essential supplies including diapers, wipes, teddy bears, blankets, safety items (i.e., car seats), etc. Volunteer opportunities include stocking the room, straightening shelves, organizing/ bagging supplies, data entry, shopping for supplies, participating in their auxiliary group, and planning their fundraisers such as the annual back to school drive, golf tournament, or Christmas project.

Fort Bend County Women's Center (Women's Center): The Women's Center focuses on serving the needs of survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, and their children, by providing emergency shelter, crisis intervention, counseling, support services and educational outreach. The Women's Center provides many volunteer opportunities for our members including: assisting with the children's program, 24-hour crisis hotline, personal accompaniment, support group, office support, volunteering at one of their thrift shop locations and organizing fundraising events such as Boogie and the Girlfriend's Giggle. Training requirements must be met for some of these areas.

Fort Bend Seniors (FBS): FBS is committed to making a difference in the lives of senior citizens living in our community. The agency offers a host of volunteer opportunities in which our members can participate. They have several Senior Congregate Centers throughout Fort Bend County (Rosenberg, Stafford, Fulshear, Fresno, Katy and Kendleton) where they offer an array of activities for seniors and a hot meal for the day. FBS also provides hot and/or frozen meals through their "Meals on Wheels" program to over 650 homebound seniors Monday-Friday. Volunteers are assigned a route with no more than ten stops that are delivered each morning before 11:30 a.m. Meals are picked up at one of their designated centers in Rosenberg, Richmond or Sugar Land. Volunteer opportunities also include the Telephone Reassurance Program, Emergency Shelf Stable Meal Package Preparation offered twice a year to help prepare seniors for inclement weather, administrative work and assisting with fundraisers. Volunteers working directly with the seniors are required to complete a criminal background check.

Houston Museum of Natural Science - Sugar Land (HMNS): HMNS exists to preserve and advance the general knowledge of natural science; enhance in individuals the knowledge and delight in natural science and related subjects; and maintain and promote a museum of the first class. HMNS hosts a variety of permanent and traveling exhibitions. With these exhibitions as a focal point, the Museum creates a wide array of educational programs for area schools as well as the Fort Bend County community. Members choosing to volunteer on this placement have the opportunity to volunteer at a variety of events hosted each month by the museum, and will also learn about science while giving hands-on presentations from one of the many touch carts located in the Museum exhibit halls on various subjects, such as Paleontology, Texas wildlife and African wildlife, Chemistry or Frogs.

Literacy Council of Fort Bend County (Literacy Council): The Literacy Council is committed to providing leadership to Fort Bend County literacy efforts through advocacy and the provision of services to functionally illiterate adults and those with limited English proficiency. The Literacy Council serves adults who have made the commitment to help themselves improve their own lives and those of their families. Well-trained and supported volunteers work one on one with adults needing help in basic literacy and on a small group basis with adults needing English as a second language skills. A volunteer will assist the Council in many different ways. Tutoring, events assistance (special events or community awareness events), and office help are just a few of the opportunities that the Council will offer throughout the year for our volunteers. Memorial Hermann Hospital is a 5-story, 77 bed, full-service acute care hospital. The hospital is a member of the Memorial Hermann Healthcare System, the largest community-based, not-for-profit health care system in Texas. Volunteer opportunities include assisting in the following departments: Front Lobby Information Desk, waiting room and/or pre-op for Day Surgery, Cath Lab Reception Desk, Outpatient Imaging Center, Nursing Units, Gift Shop, Lactation Center, clerical work and Patient/Family Services which include baking and delivering muffins, newspaper delivery and offering beverages. Volunteers are required to complete a criminal background check, TB Test (paid for by the hospital), attend an orientation, purchase a uniform jacket ($20) and follow uniform dress code and participate in an annual safety review. Hospital volunteers receive a free flu shot, meal discount in the hospital cafeteria and gift shop discount.

Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital (Memorial Hermann): Memorial Hermann Hospital is a 5-story, 77 bed, full-service acute care hospital. The hospital is a member of the Memorial Hermann Healthcare System, the largest community-based, not-for-profit health care system in Texas. FBJSL members & members of the Women's Center STARS auxiliary host a Christmas dinner and holiday party for families at the shelter.
